About the HRB
Welcome to the Hearing Resource Base
The Hearing Resource Base
We are proud to have a Hearing Resource Base (HRB) within Woodlands Primary School, and to be a deaf aware school. Pupils with a place in the HRB join an inclusive and welcoming school community as well as a caring and supportive HRB team. By attending Woodlands HRB, pupils have a sense of belonging as part of their year group class and the wider school community; and they feel pride in their deaf identity and belonging amongst their friends in the resource base.
Pupils and staff
All pupils who attend our resource base have a degree of deafness and have an Education Health and Care (EHC) plan with deafness as their primary need. Many HRB pupils also have additional needs. Most pupils communicate via spoken English or British Sign Language (BSL) sign-supported English. However, the communication mode and support we offer will always be personalised to support the individual.
Our dedicated team consists of a Teacher of the Deaf and three HRB support staff, all of whom have had specialised training and experience in supporting deaf children. All staff also have training and extensive experience in working with children with a variety of needs.
Continuity of provision
Yate Academy, which is situated on the same road as Woodlands Primary School, also has a secondary phase HRB, and the Teacher of the Deaf supports across both schools. A consistency of provision is therefore a possibility for pupils who choose to and are able to continue their education as part of a resource base.
