Science

Ignite your curiosity – understand the world.

At Woodlands, we recognise how each child has their own individual learning style. Based upon this, we value developing understanding and gathering scientific evidence in lots of different ways.

  • Using the outside environment: We are very lucky to have large school grounds which allow us to take our learning outside.  From Nursery to Key Stage Two, we use the outdoors to allow purposeful learning, such as studying local wildlife, looking at natural sources of light and seasonal changes.
  • Scientific investigations: We ensure first-hand experiences underpin scientific investigations. This enables the development of scientific skills, including predicting, hypothesising and evaluating. Throughout our school, post-it planning is used as a way for children to think through, vocalise, plan and evaluate their investigation.
  • Secondary resources: Children are given opportunities to gather ideas through the use of secondary resources, such as Quality First teaching, Read to Learn and computer research.

Through terms 1-4, there will be a sequence of working scientifically lessons that allow children to practise skills such as questioning, predicting and observing. During terms 5&6, all year groups will have a scientific topic as their primary driver. Working scientifically investigations are weaved throughout this term too.

Learning through these ways shapes inquisitive, independent, and resourceful scientists.
